HERITAGE FARM (SINCE 1893)
Chemical free Vegetables + Homesteading
Welcome to Waionehu Wild, our family farm located in Waipu, Northland. We grow chemical free vegetables to feed ourselves and the excess we either sell or turn into delicious sauerkraut, fermented vegetables, relish and chutney in our registered farmhouse kitchen. We also ferment Kombucha and Water Kefir. You’ll also find a range of beautifully fragranced candles, scented wardrobe/caravan/bathroom tablets (to keep away those fusty smells), essential oil soaps and body oils.

WHAT WE’RE ALL ABOUT
Nature + Lifestyle + Sustainability
We believe healthy soil = healthy plants = healthy humans. Producing our own food while supporting the soil systems that provide all the elements that let us grow nutrient dense vegetables is really important to us. We don't use chemicals in our growing processes and raise plants from non-gmo seeds. Our preference is to raise heritage varieties like our great-grandparents would have planted. We also grow vegetables to make relish, chutney and fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi.

LOCALLY OWNED
Edward Russell purchased the farm in 1893 from Duncan McLeod, son of famous Nova Scotian Rev. Norman Mcleod.
Originally named 'Shamrock' (Edward was Irish) the farm was initially a large dairy block for it's time but has been divided over 4 generations to now comprise 70 acres (27 hectares).
We (Grant and Sharlene Russell) returned from Australia in 2022 to grow chemical free vegetables, host homesteading workshops (preserves/ferments/crafting), start a farm shop, plant tea, herb and cut flower gardens plus some restoration projects and replanting natives along the riverbanks that border 'Waionehu Stream' to provide habitat for native birds and animals.
